Over 50 countries now issue a digital nomad visa. They are cheap, fast, and genuinely useful — but they are also widely misunderstood. Most are temporary by design: they let you stay legally for one to five years and, in many cases, lead to nothing permanent at all.

What a nomad visa does not do
It rarely leads anywhere permanent
Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Malta, Thailand, Japan and the UAE all exclude nomad time from permanent residence and citizenship. Portugal, Spain, Italy and Brazil are the exceptions worth knowing.
It doesn't settle your tax position
Stay past 183 days and you usually become tax resident — which is a separate question from your visa, and the one that actually costs money if you get it wrong.
It doesn't give you an invoicing entity
Most schemes require income from outside the country. Clients increasingly want to contract with a company, not an individual — that's a structure question, not a visa one.
It doesn't keep your books
A foreign company still has filing, bookkeeping and audit obligations. Missing them is the most common way a clean setup turns into a problem.
